'Democracy Committing Suicide' | Historian Compares Trump's USA to Hitler's Rise to Power

Oct 28, 2026 | Historian and author of the book 53 Days: How Hitler Dismantled a Democracy. Tim Ryback has written about some seeming resonances between the Third Reich and the Trump White House when it comes to ostentatious building projects, an obsession with Greenland and a big focus on tariffs. He weighs in also on what the midterms in America may hold.

Trump Did What Hitler and Mussolini Couldn't Do | Ruth Ben-Ghiat

May 28, 2026 | Deception, Dogma, and Democracy.

In this interview, historian and authoritarianism expert Ruth Ben-Ghiat breaks down the subtle mechanics of modern political control. Moving past historical models of closed-media dictatorships, Ben-Ghiat explains how authoritarian environments form in the open digital age through "short-term coordination," mandatory party dogmas, and the intentional targeting of everyday citizens to induce widespread self-censorship.

She is joined by Pat Morrison to discuss the shifting American perspective on wealth, the emotional mechanics of modern propaganda, and why the ultimate goal of authoritarian rhetoric is to make citizens police themselves.

The Bankers Who Funded Hitler — And Who Were Never Punished | WW2

Feb 20, 2026 | In the spring of 1943, an American banker travelled freely through Nazi Germany, held meetings with Reichsbank officials in Berlin, and boarded a German escort vessel back to Switzerland. Nazi U-boats had standing orders not to sink his ship. His name was Thomas McKittrick, and he was the president of the most powerful international bank in the world.

This is not a conspiracy theory. Every institution, every document, and every name in this video is a matter of verified historical record — sitting in the National Archives, in declassified Treasury memos, and in the minutes of the Nuremberg proceedings.

What you won't find in most history books is the full story of how Wall Street bankrolled the economic conditions that brought Hitler to power, how Standard Oil shared critical war technology with Nazi Germany while withholding it from the US military, how Chase National Bank kept its Paris branch open under Nazi occupation and reported growing profits to Manhattan, how the Bank for International Settlements laundered looted Nazi gold throughout the war, how Prescott Bush — grandfather of two US presidents — had his assets seized under the Trading with the Enemy Act, and how a Swedish banking dynasty quietly played both sides and walked away to build a $60 billion empire.

Most of these men were never prosecuted. Most were promoted. And the systems they built are still running today. This is what economic history actually looks like.

Why Did These Companies Partner with Nazi Germany?

Jul 12, 2023 | Several well-established American companies aided Nazi Germany during the Holocaust, directly profiting from the atrocities perpetrated against the Jewish People. These include well-known businesses like IBM, which supplied data processing systems to the Nazi regime, and Ford, whose German subsidiary produced military vehicles for the Wehrmacht.

The majority of individuals involved in the decision to do business with Nazi Germany were motivated by greed rather than anti-Semitism.

The question remains whether or not these corporations should continue to be held responsible today for the role they played in the murder of Jews during World War II.

Hitler's American Business Partners

This documentary uncovers the unholy alliance between Nazi Germany and some of the biggest corporations in the US — companies which were indispensable for Hitler to wage war. Henry Ford, the automobile manufacturer; James D Mooney, the General Motors manager; and Thomas Watson, the IBM boss were all awarded the Grand Cross of the German Eagle — the Nazi's highest distinction for foreigners for their services to the Third Reich.

Cyprus Fallout: Moscow Accuses Euro Zone of Theft -- and Worse

SPIEGEL ONLINE INTERNATIONAL: Russia has sharply criticized the bailout deal for Cyprus, with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev accusing the EU of theft. Russian state television even likened the forced levy imposed on wealthy investors -- many of them Russian -- to the expropriation of Jews by Nazi Germany.

The verdict of Russian state television on Europe's effort to save Cyprus was damning. The last week "will enter the history books of the EU as a destructive one," said Dmitry Kiselev, the presenter of the popular news program Vesti Nedili on the Rossiya channel.

Kiselev heaped criticism on the forced levy to be imposed on bank deposits in Cyprus. He said the last time a Western European government proceeded so recklessly was when Adolf Hitler expropriated the Jews.

Nazi propaganda at the time described the money held by Jewish people as "dirty," said Kiselev. That was precisely how Europe was talking about Russian assets deposited in Cyprus, he added.

"The new world order is being founded against Russia, at Russia's costs and on the rubble of Russia," said a Rossiya correspondent from the Mediterranean island nation.

The Kremlin feels it has been sidelined in the tug-of-war over the Cypriot bailout, European Commission President José Manuel Barroso visited Moscow for talks last Friday, but just a few days later, Europe's new attempt to avert a financial meltdown in Cyprus has elicited fierce criticism from Moscow. » | Benjamin Bidder in Moscow | Monday, March 25, 2013

Troubled Greece: Fears of 'First Domino' to Fall as Austerity Is Counted a Failure

THE GUARDIAN: Greek's leftist party Syriza says recovery depends on a renegotiated bail-out and access to European structural funds

The soup kitchen opens at noon but long before then the queues start to form in the hot Athens sun. A couple of streets away from where sardines, red mullet and squid are piled high in the fish market, those down on their luck line up. While elsewhere life goes on seemingly as normal, students, jobless people, single parents and pensioners swallow their pride and wait patiently. They get two meals a day, at midday and 5pm. This is what a depression looks like.

At first blush, Greece seems no different from any other developed country. People sit in the city centre cafes sipping their iced coffees; yellow taxis cruise the streets; the shops are open for business. But different it is, and it is not hard to spot the signs that this is an economy that has contracted by 20% since the downturn began three years ago and that it is still falling.

You don't need to know that spending in the shops is down by a sixth over the past year; it is obvious from the empty cabs and those shops open but with no customers. You don't need to know that the official unemployment rate is well above 20% and youth unemployment is nudging 50%: it's obvious from the young men idling on street corners and openly dealing drugs.

Greece is broke and close to being broken. It is a country where children are fainting in school because they are hungry, where 20,000 Athenians are scavenging through waste tips for food, and where the lifeblood of a modern economy – credit – is fast drying up.

It is a country where the fascists and the anarchists battle for control of the streets, where immigrants fear to go out at night and where a woman whispers "it's like the Weimar republic" as a motorcycle cavalcade from the Golden Dawn party, devotees of Adolf Hitler, cruises past the parliament building. Graffiti says: "Foreigners get out of Greece. Greece is for the Greeks. I will vote for Golden Dawn to remove the filth from the country." » | Larry Elliott, economics editor | Thursday, May 31, 2012
