Abu Dhabi and Soros Got 'Golden Ticket' in Royal Mail Sale

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Sovereign wealth funds and billionaire investors among 16 firms given preferential treatment over small investors in the Royal Mail privatisation

Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, billionaire investor George Soros and activist hedge fund Third Point were among the 16 investors given preferential treament in the controversial Royal Mail privatisation.

The Government on Wednesday released details of these preferred investment firms, who saw their shares jump 38pc rise on the first day of trading, while thousands of small private investors missed out after the Government imposed a cap of £10,000 on them.

Other preferential investors included Lazard Asset Management, the investment arm of the government’s independent adviser on the privatisation, Capital Research, Fidelity Worldwide, GIC, Henderson, JP Morgan, Kuwait Investment Office, Lansdowne Partners, , Och Ziff, Schroders, Standard Life, and Threadneedle.

The Government, which has insisted that Royal Mail was not sold on the cheap, has been under pressure to release the names of "pilot fishing investors".

Ed Miliband, the Labour leader, clashed with David Cameron at Prime Minister's Question Time. He said some of the firms invited to invest in the business were given a "golden ticket" and had made a "fast buck" by selling the shares as their price soared, with some selling on the first day of privatisation. » | Telegraph Staff | Wednesday, April 30, 2014

'There Will Be Riots on Streets of America': George Soros Predicts Class War in U.S. as Euro Triggers Collapse of Global Economy

MAIL ONLINE: Billionaire New York investor warns of impending economic meltdown / Backs euro and buys Italian bonds from Jon Corzine's failed MF Global / Warns it's 'difficult to know right decisions to make' after boom years / Supports Occupy Wall Street, Democrats and Obama re-election efforts

Billionaire investor George Soros has warned the global economic system could collapse and riots on the streets of America are on the way.

The 81-year-old said he’d rather survive than stay rich as the world faces an ‘evil’ period and Europe fights a ‘descent into chaos and conflict’.

He has backed the euro, bought $2billion in European bonds and insisted the economic climate is similar to the 1930s Great Depression.

‘The euro must survive because the alternative - a breakup - would cause a meltdown that Europe, the world, can’t afford,’ he told Newsweek.

‘The situation is about as serious and difficult as I’ve experienced in my career. We are facing now a general retrenchment in the developed world.’

His warnings came as U.S. stocks dipped on Tuesday, with talks to resolve Greece's debt crisis faltering and threatening a five-day winning streak. » | Mark Duell | Tuesday, January 24, 2012

George Soros explains to Reuters' Chrystia Freeland how German Chancellor Angela Merkel's actions in 2008 could lead to the disintegration of the European Union. Consequently, a disorderly default of European sovereignties may lead to a global financial meltdown worse than 2008. He explains his analysis here.

Soros: European Governments Have the Bazooka

The EU must use ''the bazooka in its hands'' properly to combat debt default, George Soros tells Reuters' Chrystia Freeland. The European Central Bank should not recapitalize the banks, but rather, guarantee the banks against default.

Geroge [sic] Soros Blames Officials as Greek Crisis Escalates

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Billionaire investor George Soros has criticised international authorities for "not providing a solution" for the European debt crisis as Greek sovereign bond yields were pushed to record levels again.

Mr Soros, who spoke out as European finance ministers met today to discuss the crisis, said the officials were "basically buying time" rather than tackling the problems. He added: "This is the normal thing for authorities to do. In this case, I'm afraid they are making a mistake."

Credit markets were thrown into fresh turmoil as Greek debt became the lowest rated in the world following a savage downgrade by Standard & Poor's on Monday.

The yield on 10-year Greek government bonds spiked to a record high of more than 17pc as investors demanded a higher return to cover the risks of holding the debt.

Greek debt is now the lowest rated in the world – below Ecuador and Grenada – with many investors now expecting an uncontrolled default.

The emergency meeting of eurozone finance ministers was called by Jean-Claude Juncker, chairman of the group, and comes ahead of a summit in Brussels next week. The group has set a deadline of June 20 to agree a new aid package for Greece, the country's second in 14 months. Read on and comment » | Louise Armitstead | Tuesday, June 14, 2011
