Democracy is an illusion! It’s become a political system fostered by the élite, for the élite, in order to fool the people that they have a stake in the system. In actual fact, they have virtually none. The whole political system in the modern era, despite having noble beginnings, is now used to benefit the few at the expense of the many. – Mark Alexander, June 29, 2018

All the President’s Millions: How the Trumps Are Turning the Presidency into Riches
THE GUARDIAN: From Vietnam to the Balkans, Donald Trump’s family has launched a global dealmaking blitz since his re-election
Acrusading prosecutor in the Balkans comes under pressure to drop a big case. Vietnamese villagers learn they are to be evicted. A convicted crypto kingpin in the Gulf receives a pardon.
All have one thing in common: they appear to be connected to the Trump family’s campaign to amass riches around the world. Since Donald Trump’s re-election a year ago, warnings that his use of presidential power to advance personal interests is corroding American democracy have grown ever louder. What is less understood – and perhaps even more dangerous – is the damage this is doing everywhere else.
Trump’s eldest sons, Don Jr and Eric, formally the custodians of the family business, are conducting a global dealmaking blitz. They have broken ground on new golf courses, received permission for new skyscrapers, rented out the Trump brand, and in cryptocurrency they have embraced a venture with the capacity to bring in more than everything that has gone before.
They insist, in Eric’s words, that there is a “huge wall” between this moneymaking and their father’s position as the most powerful man alive. “Nothing I do has anything to do with the White House,” Eric told CNN recently.
But Kristofer Harrison, a senior foreign policy official under President George W Bush who now runs an anti-corruption organisation called the Dekleptocracy Project, is among those accusing the Trumps of operating a “pay to play” system that benefits those who do business with the president’s family. Such an approach could be manipulated, he said, especially by rival powers such as China. He said: “Trump has made authoritarians’ wildest dreams come true.” » | Tom Burgis | Sunday, November 30, 2025

Brian Klaas: “The United States Is Now a Competitive Authoritarian System”
LSE: Is the United States still a democracy? In an interview with EUROPP’s editor Stuart Brown, Brian Klaas discusses Donald Trump’s impact on American and global democracy.
I would say the United States is now a “competitive authoritarian” system. This is political science jargon for countries that have the trappings of democracy, but without a level playing field.
In other words, there is genuine competition in the United States between political parties and democratic institutions persist, but the state is able to manipulate outcomes to its advantage, disadvantage its opponents and use state power in illegitimate or undemocratic ways with little to no recourse against it.
Political scientists continue to debate this topic, but few would classify the United States as a robust democracy. It is either a democracy in crisis that is barely clinging onto the label, or one that has tipped over the edge into competitive authoritarianism – and I believe it’s the latter. » | Brian Klaas | Friday, September 19, 2025

Michael Lambert: The UK Economy Is Heading for Trouble
I know this has been stated so many times before, but I will state it again: This country’s economic woes begin and end with Brexit.
The country has been in terminal decline since the end of the Great War, but we hitched our wagon to Europe’s for that very reason: to arrest that terminal decline. I am old enough to remember the very first referendum on the European question. The people who voted for that idiotic Brexit were taken in by the likes of Farage because of their lack of understanding of the history of this nation’s decline. Harsh though it sounds, it must be re-iterated: Brexiteers were taken in because they knew no better. Because they knew no better, people like Farage could fool them.
Even Thatcher, who was no lover of the European Project, realised the importance of the European Single Market. In fact, without her unstinting efforts, the Single Market would probably not have come about. Margaret Thatcher was one of the Single Market’s main architects, arguably the main architect. She knew that there was no prosperity for Britain unless we were in it, unless we took an active part in it. Not so much politically, perhaps, but certainly economically.
There is therefore only one solution to this problem, and it is this: we MUST correct our mistake and re-join that market. Our main obstacle to our doing so is our dullard politicians. Some say that Europe won’t let us back in. Poppycock! With Russia knocking on Europe’s door and with Trump abandoning Europe in favour of befriending Vladimir Putin, the European Union needs all the friends it can get. It also needs Britain’s first-class military expertise to help guarantee Europe’s continued security.
So, we need a leader who is charismatic, powerful, and courageous. One who will swim against the tide. One who will take us back into the European Union as FULL MEMBERS, with no ifs and buts. We need to embrace the euro as well and ditch the pound. We need not only to be taken back into the EU, but we need to demonstrate our absolute commitment to the Project. Our place in the EU needs to be locked in. Then, and only then, will this country have a fighting chance for a full economic recovery. Re-entering the European Union would not only help stimulate economic growth for this country, it would also help stimulate European economic growth, too. Our re-entrance would shore up optimism. Nothing hampers economic growth as much as pessimism and restrictions to trade. Commerce thrives on optimism and freedom from restrictions.
Moreover, it should be added that many of our other woes would be solved by re-entry into the EU as well. The problem of a shortage of labour, for example, and the problem of illegal immigrants.

UK Chancellor Says Ordinary People Will Pay 'A Little Bit More' as She Defends Budget | BBC News
Nov 26, 2025 | UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves - the minister in charge of the government's finances – has set out details of her second Budget since becoming chancellor.
Reeves said she is asking "ordinary people to pay a little bit more" after she announced tax rises of £26bn to come into force by 2030.
Setting out her Budget in the Commons earlier, she said that income tax thresholds would be frozen until 2031, while the two-child welfare cap would be scrapped.
A spokesman has said the chancellor has confidence in the head of the Office for Budget Responsibility, Richard Hughes, after the watchdog mistakenly published details of the Budget early.

PRESIDENT FOR LIFE
THE ATLANTIC: Donald Trump is trying to amass the powers of a king.
IN THE NORMAL course of history, the president of the United States is a figure who inspires optimism in the American people. The 47th president prefers to stir feelings of fear, vulnerability, hopelessness, and political inevitability—the sense that he, and only he, can rescue the nation from looming peril. Since his second inauguration, Donald Trump has seized authoritarian control over the federal government and demanded the obedience of the other powerful institutions of American society—universities, law firms, media companies. The question weighing heavily on the minds of many Americans is whether Trump will subvert next year’s midterm elections or the 2028 presidential election to extend his reign.
With his every word and deed, Trump has given Americans reason to believe that he will seek a third term, in defiance of the Constitution. It seems abundantly clear that he will hold on to the office at any cost, including America’s ruin.
The Founders of our nation foresaw a figure like Trump, a demagogue who would ascend to the presidency and refuse to relinquish power to a successor chosen by the American people in a free and fair election. Writing to James Madison from Paris in 1787, Thomas Jefferson warned that such an incumbent, if narrowly defeated, would “pretend false votes, foul play, hold possession of the reins of government.” Were that moment ever to come, the Founders believed, it would mark the demise of the nation that they had conceived, bringing to a calamitous end the greatest experiment in self-government ever attempted by man.
Trump proved in 2021 that he would do anything to remain in the White House. Even after the violence of January 6, his second impeachment, and the conviction and incarceration of scores of his followers, he reiterated his willingness to subvert the 2024 election. That proved unnecessary. Yet since his victory, Trump has again told the American people that he is prepared to do what it takes to remain in power, the Constitution be damned. » | J. Why Britain No Longer Makes Things — and How We Rebuild
For forty years, we were told that Britain didn’t need manufacturing — finance would make us rich. That experiment has failed. We import more than we export, our towns have been hollowed out, and our prosperity rests on hot money and property bubbles rather than productive capacity.
In this video, I explain why Britain’s industrial collapse was a political choice, how Thatcherism destroyed long-term investment, why Labour still worships foreign takeovers, and why rebuilding national capability now requires deliberate government action.
We need regional public investment banks, a tax system that rewards real production, not speculation, and a new industrial strategy that blends modern manufacturing with care, education and innovation. This is about well-being, security, and the future of our democracy.

Millions of UK Workers to Get Pay Rise as Reeves Plans Increased Minimum Wage
THE GUARDIAN: Chancellor says people must be ‘properly rewarded for their hard work’ with 16- to 21-year-olds also in line for raise
Millions of low-paid workers in the UK are to get a pay rise of 4.1% next year, as Rachel Reeves confirmed that minimum wage rates will go up as part of the government’s ambition to improve living standards.
The national living wage will rise from £12.21 to £12.71 an hour from April for over-21s, which the government said would increase the annual earnings of about 2.4 million workers by £900.
The minimum wage for 18- to 20-year-olds will increase by 8.5% to £10.85 an hour, narrowing the gap with older workers as part of the government’s commitment to “raise the floor” on wages for all workers.
The Treasury had been concerned about the increase in youth rates with some ministers and officials fearing that they could be “priced out” of entry-level jobs. » | Pippa Crerar | Political editor | Tuesday, November 25, 2025

Michael Lambert: AI Is About to Change Everything You Know!
Nov 22, 2025 | AI is about to reshape our world faster than any technology in human history. Not just in terms of convenience or efficiency — but in terms of jobs, power, government, national identity and the basic meaning of human life.
In this video I explain why AI is not “just another tech trend”, but a genuine economic and social tsunami. We already see banks, councils, law firms, call centres, the media, accountants and logistics companies quietly replacing human thinking with AI systems. The pace is accelerating — and politicians are asleep.
What happens when 40–50% of people are no longer economically useful? What happens when machines take over the thinking, the planning, the decision-making — not in 50 years, but within the next decade? How does society function when human intelligence is no longer the most valuable commodity?
This is the most important video I’ve made because we are entering a future for which our institutions, our politics and our culture are completely unprepared.

Swiss Gold and Rolex Gifts to Trump Arouse ‘Disgust’ in Europe
THE GUARDIAN: Billionaires gave desk clock and engraved gold bar weeks before Trump slashed tariffs on imports from Switzerland
A gold Rolex desk clock and a $130,000 engraved gold bar given to Donald Trump by a group of Swiss billionaires have raised questions in Europe and the US about the personalisation of US presidential power.
Pasquale Tridico, an Italian MEP and the former head of the country’s national institute for social security said he was “disgusted” by the golden charm offensive, made weeks before Trump decided to slash 39% tariffs on Swiss imports to 15%.
“This is really awful,” he said, claiming that it seemed to be a case of “making foreign policy the policy of individuals”.
Lisa Mazzone, the president of the Green party in Switzerland said the gifts appeared to show Trump’s “corrupt logic had poisoned the Swiss elite”.
“It is unacceptable that the federal council is relying on the help of an economic elite that represents private interests and lacks democratic legitimacy in its negotiations with the US president,” she added. » | Lisa O’Carroll in Brussels | Friday, November 21, 2025

Saudi Arabia Backs Elon Musk’s xAI With Data Center Deal
THE NEW YORK TIMES: Mr. Musk’s xAI will work with the Saudi artificial intelligence company Humain on a new data center, part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s effort to diversify his kingdom’s economy.
Elon Musk has been hunting for partners to grow his artificial intelligence start-up xAI as it tries to keep pace with OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia has been trying to diversify his oil-rich kingdom’s economy by making it a global hub for tech and artificial intelligence.
On Wednesday, their intersecting interests led to a deal.
Mr. Musk’s xAI, which makes the Grok chatbot, agreed to work with the state-backed Saudi company Humain to build a new data center in the Persian Gulf kingdom. The project is set to consume as much as 500 megawatts of electricity, which would make it xAI’s biggest data center outside the United States. Humain and xAI did not disclose the value of the deal.
The project was part of a package of military and tech deals announced on Wednesday during Prince Mohammed’s visit to Washington. The United States and Saudi Arabia appear to have reached an agreement that clears the path for the kingdom to buy the U.S. semiconductors needed to power artificial intelligence, as the United States has used A.I. chips as part of geopolitical diplomacy. » | Adam Satariano and Paul Mozur | Wednesday, November 19, 2025

How This 19-Year-Old Beggar Became One of Britain’s Richest Men
Nov 16, 2025 | Discover the unbelievable true story of Thomas Lipton — the Victorian boy who grew up in deep poverty and went on to become one of Britain’s richest men.
Born in Glasgow to struggling Irish immigrants, Lipton started life with nothing. At nineteen, he was sleeping on floors, taking any work he could find, and begging for food to survive.
This documentary traces how he built a global empire from the ground up. Through shop records, immigration files, Victorian newspapers, and family archives, we follow his journey from working in grocery stores in America to opening his first small shop in Glasgow, then expanding into one of the most successful retail businesses in Britain.
Thomas Lipton later created one of the world’s most famous tea brands, reshaped food marketing, and became a household name. But behind the global success was a life shaped by hardship, ambition, and the harsh realities of Victorian Britain.
This is the forgotten rise of a boy who refused to stay poor — and built a legacy that still exists today.

Nov 8, 2025 | Elections in the United States this week showed that many of Donald Trump's former supporters are turning on him: blaming him for their economic woes.
Difficulties only exacerbated by a six-week-long government shutdown that's now starting to hit air travel.
More than a thousand flights were cancelled yesterday, and nearly another thousand today. The government says it needs to relieve pressure on air-traffic controllers, currently working without pay.

Out-of-touch Trump Talks Up Economy among Sycophants and Stars in Miami
THE GUARDIAN: President jets in to speak at ritzy American Business Forum as millions see their food aid slashed – crisis, what crisis?
It was the week in which Republicans took a beating at the polls, the government shutdown became the longest in history, and 42 million people across the country, including 3 million in Florida, saw their federal food aid slashed.
But in the alternative reality of Miami, where tickets to an overwhelmingly conservative business conference headlined by Donald Trump cost up to $1,990, and billionaires from Saudi Arabia rubbed shoulders with equally wealthy American tycoons such as Jeff Bezos and Ken Griffin, those events created barely a ripple.
Instead, in a gesture that appeared almost to mock the widening disparity between the city’s haves and have-nots, organizers of the America Business Forum cooked up a little treat for attendees: a $50 gift card to spend on food to sustain themselves while they listened to their president congratulate himself for a “golden age” he said his “economic miracle” had delivered.
Advocates say the move, along with the high-budget opulence of the conference itself, was an ill-timed insult to more than a half-million Miami-Dade county residents who just saw their own ability to buy essential groceries for their families kiboshed by the gutting of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Snap). » | Richard Luscombe in Miami | Friday, November 7, 2025

Michael Lambert: The Grim Reality of Britain's Economic Future
Nov 8, 2025 | I was tempted to begin this video by warning anyone of a nervous disposition to look away — because the truth about Britain’s economic future is not pleasant.
In this video, I explain why I believe the U.K. faces long-term decline, why genuine recovery is almost impossible, and how Brexit has made everything worse by cutting us off from our largest trading partner.
I also look briefly at the U.S. economy, where an AI bubble may soon burst, but the heart of this video is Britain — its structural weakness, political chaos, and loss of direction.

Tesla Shareholders Approve $1tn Pay Package for Elon Musk
THE GUARDIAN: Chants of ‘Elon’ erupt after compensation plan approved despite opposition from several high-profile investors
Tesla shareholders approved a $1tn compensation plan for CEO Elon Musk on Thursday, awarding the world’s richest person what would be the largest corporate payout in history if he meets the goals necessary to receive it.
The pay package, which several high profile investors opposed, demonstrates that shareholders still believe Musk can lead the automaker in an era dominated by robotics and artificial intelligence.
The result of the vote was announced at the annual shareholder event in Austin, Texas, with more than 75% of investors voting in favor of the plan. Chants of “Elon” erupted in the room at the news of its approval.
“Thanks guys,” Musk said, after briefly dancing on stage alongside the company’s Optimus robots. » | Maddy Lauria and Nick Robins-Early | Thursday, November 6, 2025

Wall Street and Bitcoin Plunge over AI Bubble Fears
THE TELEGRAPH: Global stocks fell sharply and Bitcoin plunged below $100,000 as fears mount that an artificial intelligence bubble is about to burst.
The price of the cryptocurrency dropped by as much as 6.7pc on Tuesday, briefly falling to $99,936 (£76,747) - the first time it has fallen below $100,000 since June.
It means Bitcoin has now officially entered a bear market, with the prices falling by more than 20pc since its last peak in October.
Global share prices also slumped as the bosses of Wall Street giants Goldman Sachs and Morgan Sachs predicted major stock market falls and the US investor depicted in the film “The Big Short” placed a $1bn bet against AI.
America’s benchmark S&P 500 index fell by 1.18pc while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite dropped by 1.84pc.
Share indexes in France, Germany and Japan also all sank by more than 1pc on Tuesday amid fears the AI-led market boom is running out of steam. » | Chris Price. Melissa Lawford US Economics Correspondent | Tuesday, November 4, 2025
