Jonathan Ross Epitomises Our Society's Declining Standards

THE TELEGRAPH: In bringing back the disgraced presenter, the BBC betrays the values it is paid to uphold, argues Charles Moore

On Friday of next week, Jonathan Ross will return to our screens. Despite the obscene and bullying telephone messages Ross left for the actor Andrew Sachs, the BBC, which broadcast them, has continued to retain his services. He gets £6 million a year, which makes him the best-paid person in the history of the Corporation.

Readers may remember that this column's protest against the Sachs affair is that, unless Ross goes, I shall keep my television, but refuse to renew my licence fee. Since Mr Sachs was verbally assaulted because he was old – the main "joke" being that Ross's companion, Russell Brand, had slept with his granddaughter – I shall pay the £139.50 that I will withhold to Help the Aged. >>> By Charles Moore | Friday, January 16, 2009
