THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Hundreds of GPs are earning more than £200,000 a year with the average doctor earning more than £100,000, it has emerged.
Official figures have revealed that 890 GPs earned more than £200,000 in 2009/10, slightly fewer than the number in that bracket the previous year.
However 210 of those earned more than £250,000.
High earning doctors run the business side of the practice and many also have pharmacies allowing them to dispense medicines.
GP earnings have proved controversial as it was revealed last week that one unnamed doctor in Kent earned a pre-tax salary of £770,000.
Another doctor, in Birmingham, earned £665,000, while another in Essex was paid £412,400.
Data from the NHS Information centre, based on tax returns, found that on average a partner in a GP practice earned £105,700 in 2009/10.
David Cameron earns around £142,000 a year by comparison. » | Rebecca Smith | Wednesday, November 09, 2011
