How Would a No-deal Brexit Affect You?

A no-deal Brexit would see the UK leave the EU immediately. There would be no transition period and the relationship between the EU and the UK left undefined. Overnight, the laws that set out how businesses trade, how people and goods move across Europe would cease to exist. So how exactly would a no-deal Brexit affect you?

Greg Clark: No-Deal Brexit Would Destroy 'Thousands' of Jobs

THE GUARDIAN: Business secretary’s warning comes as peers back bid to stop new PM proroguing Commons

A no-deal Brexit would lead to the loss of “many thousands” of jobs, the business secretary has warned.

Greg Clark urged Tory MPs to “strain every sinew to avoid“ crashing out of the EU under the next prime minister, with leadership rivals Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt both saying they would be prepared to leave the bloc on 31 October without a deal.

They face a battle to force through their commitments, however, as MPs and peers launch tactical bids to block any attempt to prorogue parliament in order to force through a no-deal Brexit.

Clark told Sky News on Friday that the disruption of a no-deal departure would lead to job losses. “It’s evident that if you have the disruption that comes from a no-deal Brexit there will be people that will lose their jobs. It’s many thousands of jobs. Everyone knows that.” » | Seth Jacobson and agencies | Friday, July 12, 2019

Jeremy Hunt Sparks Business Anger with No-deal Brexit Comment

THE GUARDIAN: Tory leadership hopeful says he would tell bankrupt firms their sacrifice was worth it

Business groups have expressed anger after Jeremy Hunt said he would willingly tell people whose companies went bust after a no-deal Brexit that their sacrifice had been necessary.

In a notable escalation of his rhetoric on Brexit, the foreign secretary, who is trailing Boris Johnson in the Conservative leadership election, also said he would actively pursue no deal if a new departure plan looked impossible by the start of October – less than 10 weeks after the new prime minister takes office.

Hunt’s shift towards the harder language associated with Johnson, who has promised to deliver Brexit by 31 October “do or die”, has alarmed some fellow Conservatives. A senior party source said it was “shocking to hear an allegedly sensible politician talk so frivolously about the livelihoods of millions of people”. » | Peter Walker, Political correspondent | Sunday, June 30, 2019

UK Led towards No-deal Brexit by Untruthful Elite, Says Ex-EU Envoy

THE GUARDIAN: Ivan Rogers offers withering assessment of Tory candidates vying to be prime minister

Britain is being led to a no-deal Brexit by a political elite “which has great difficulties discerning and telling the truth”, the UK’s former ambassador to the EU has said, in a withering assessment of the Conservative candidates vying to be prime minister.

Ivan Rogers, who resigned from his post in 2017 after clashing with Theresa May’s senior advisers, suggested it was “probable” the UK would leave the EU without a deal in what he described as an act of “economic lunacy”.

He said the Tory leadership election brought to mind the quote of the French statesman Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord about the Bourbons in that they had “learned nothing and forgotten nothing”.

“We hear all manner of undeliverable promises, made as if the events of the last three years have made no impact on the collective consciousness,” Rogers said of the remaining leadership candidates. » | Daniel Boffey in Brussels | Tuesday, June 18, 2019

IMF Says No-deal Brexit Risks Two-year Recession for UK

THE GUARDIAN: World Economic Outlook refers to ‘large, long-lasting negative impacts’ on Britain and EU Britain’s already struggling economy would be pushed into a two-year recession by a no-deal Brexit, the International Monetary Fund has warned.

Ahead of Theresa May’s plea to EU leaders for a further delay to Britain’s departure, the IMF used a downbeat half-yearly assessment of the global economy to predict that the UK economy could be 3.5% smaller than expected by 2021 if trade barriers were swiftly erected.

The World Economic Outlook – completed in March before the latest developments in Brexit – predicted UK growth of 1.2% in 2019 on the assumption that a Brexit deal is done.

Growth in 2020 has also been revised down – by 0.1 points to 1.4% – since the fund’s last WEO in October, but the IMF said its projections were surrounded by uncertainty. » | Larry Elliott in Washington | Tuesday, April 9, 2019

UK Retirees in EU Will Lose Free Healthcare under No-deal Brexit

THE GUARDIAN: Burden on NHS could increase after 29 March if pensioners return to UK for treatment

British nationals who have retired to EU countries including Spain and France will no longer have their healthcare covered by the NHS in the event of no Brexit deal, the government has said.

The confirmation will come as a blow to around 190,000 British citizens retired in the EU in places such as the Spanish Costas, Provence in France and Tuscany in Italy.

It could also add to the burden on the NHS if pensioners believe they have no option but to return to the UK for treatment. The government has previously admitted it is cheaper to pay Spain and France to look after British nationals than have them fly home.

Currently pensioners can get treatment reimbursed by the NHS under an EU-wide set of reciprocal arrangements. » | Lisa O'Carroll, Brexit correspondent | Tuesday, January 29, 2019

No-deal Brexit 'Poses Threat to Global Stability' – CBI Head

THE GUARDIAN: Carolyn Fairbairn warns bosses at Davos that damage caused by disorderly exit could spread far beyond the UK

Fears are growing internationally that a no-deal Brexit poses a threat to the stability of the global economy, the head of Britain’s leading business body has warned.

Carolyn Fairbairn, director-general of the CBI, said the failure to sort out Britain’s departure from the European Union was damaging Britain’s brand abroad and had joined a list of systemic risks to the world economy.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Fairbairn said there was mounting concern at the potential for a no-deal Brexit to cause damage well beyond the UK. The CBI held a private breakfast for UK business leaders in Davos attended by the head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde. The UK chancellor, Philip Hammond, will address a CBI lunch on Thursday.

Fairbairn told the Guardian: “At my meetings at Davos, there is a recognition that the causes of vulnerability of the global economy now include Brexit.” » | Larry Elliott and Graeme Weardenin Davos | Thursday, January 24, 2019
