Trichet Calls for Action to Prevent New Financial Crisis

Sep.11 -- Former European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet discusses the state of the economy and the financial industry 10 years after the collapse of Lehman Brothers. He speaks with Bloomberg’s Tom Keene and Francine Lacqua on "Bloomberg Surveillance."

The Crash – The Investment Bank Lehman Brothers | DW Documentary

Investment bank Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy in New York on September 15, 2008 after more than 150 years in the banking business. [Online until: 13.10.2018]

At the time, the company had accumulated over $600 billion in debt. It did not just hit the US financial system hard: global networking sent companies around the world into a tailspin. How could that happen? And above all, could it happen again? The documentary tells of the risky rise and ruinous collapse of former global investment bankers Lehman Brothers. The bank had sensed a killing when the US Federal Reserve massively cut interest rates at the beginning of the millennium. "Cheap money" gave many Americans the feeling that they too could fulfill the dream of owning their own homes. Loans were made without anyone asking if customers were really solvent. These mortgages were then bundled and offered for sale as "safe bonds." But real estate prices in the US fell and those so-called safe bonds turned into liabilities, sending shockwaves around the world. More than 500 investors in Singapore suddenly faced bankruptcy in 2008. They had bought into so-called mini-bonds - innovative products that specifically targeted private investors, promising them high profits and maximum security. But most people did not understand what was actually behind them. Many of these bonds were linked to American banks such as Lehman Brothers. In the end, Lehman Brothers had to file for bankruptcy, leaving thousands of small investors around the world facing ruin.

MAIL Online: The disgraced head of the giant investment bank whose collapse set off a panic which led to the US economic rescue package took home more than £172 million since 2000, he told the U.S. Congress.

Richard S Fuld Jr, chief executive officer of Lehman Brothers, ignored a warning that the bank's 'liquidity can disappear quite fast' and dismissed suggestions that staff may not get their bonuses.

Days from becoming the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history, Lehman Brothers steered millions to departing executives even while pleading for a federal rescue, Congress heard.

The American government let Lehman go under on September 15, only to bail out insurance giant AIG the next day, in a cascading series of financial shocks and failures that put Washington on track for the multibillion-dollar rescue starting the end of that week.

President George Bush and U.S. Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson set about convincing US political leaders that the rescue package, which commits up to £403billion of taxpayers' money, was necessary.

The revelations about the payments to the bank's executives came in the first hearing into what caused the U.S. financial markets to collapse last month, which opened with finger-pointing and glimpses into internal company documents from Lehman's chaotic final hours.

Asked if it was true he took home some £275 million in compensation since 2000, Mr Fuld took off his glasses, held them, and looked uncomfortable. He said his compensation was not quite that much.
'We had a compensation committee that spent a tremendous amount of time making sure that the interests of the executives and the employees were aligned with shareholders,' he said.

Mr Fuld added that he took home more than £172million in those years - some £34.4million in cash compensation. Disgraced Chief of Failed Bank Lehman Brothers Pocketed £172million Before Collapse >>> By David Gardner | October 8, 2008

Fury at $2.5bn Lehman Bonus

TIMESONLINE: Nomura and Barclays table bids today for US giant’s London operation as bank’s administrator likens collapse to Enron

STAFF at Lehman’s New York office who helped to cause the world’s biggest corporate bankruptcy are to share in a $2.5 billion bonanza.

The bonus, which has been described by London staff as a “scandal” has been pledged by Barclays Capital, the British-based bank that last week acquired Lehman’s American operation and took on 10,000 staff.

The $2.5 billion (£1.4 billion) pot, which has been ring-fenced as part of the acquisition, has caused huge resentment among the 5,000 staff in the firm’s European and Middle Eastern operations who are not guaranteed to be paid after this month.

There are, however, hopes that half the jobs in Lehman’s Canary Wharf office could be saved today by either Barclays or Nomura. Bids are being submitted for its UK equities and investment-banking business. Fury at $2.5bn Lehman Bonus >>> By John Waples and Danny Fortson | Septemebr 21, 2008

FBI Launches Investigation into Collapsed Finance Giants: The FBI is investigating four major U.S. financial institutions whose collapse has forced George Bush's administration to launch a $700 billion bail-out.

Federal investigators are said to be looking at potential fraud by mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, investment bankers Lehman Brothers and insurers AIG.
The probe, still in its opening stages, will focus on the financial institutions and their top managers.

Watch video: City analyst assesses the market as FTSE falls >>>

TIMESONLINE: A financial disaster that would dwarf the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy loomed today as one of the world's biggest insurers was shaken to its foundations.

Shares in American International Group (AIG) today fell 43.28 per cent amid fears that a £42 billion rescue package might fail to materialise.

David Paterson, the New York Governor who is coordinating efforts to bolster the insurer, gave warning that the insurance giant had just one day left to resolve its financial problems before triggering "catastrophe".

AIG, once the world's largest insurance company, has 116,000 staff — four times more than Lehman Brothers, the US investment bank that filed for bankruptcy yesterday — and its collapse could have a cataclysmic effect on global markets.
